After the overly hospitable guy from Skypea survived a nuke to the face and bird guy from Alabasta tanked the time bomb that could destroy the whole city, scenes like these don't really hold much weight on me anymore

Yeah, I kinda agree. Pell's ( Alabasta guy) sacrifice could have been so impactful, but he just returned later which made the scene lose its depth.
But I also feel that Oda keeping all these characters alive really added to the shock and impact of Ace dying for someone who did not get spoiled.
